What is emergency dentistry?

Emergency dentistry is available for patients who have suffered a dental injury, accident, or are experiencing severe pain and discomfort. The goal is to relieve pain quickly and restore optimal oral health as soon as possible.

With active kids involved in contact sports or everyday exploration, accidents can happen at any time. That’s why pediatric dentists often keep openings in their schedules for same-day emergency appointments, ensuring your child’s needs are addressed promptly.

What to Do if Your Child Experiences a Dental Emergency

Thorough Cleaning

First, your child's dentist or hygienist will conduct a quick oral exam and start cleaning their teeth. Plaque and tartar will be removed through scaling, followed by brushing with a high-powered brush and flossing to eliminate any remaining food particles and debris.

Keep Calm So They Stay Calm

It’s natural to feel anxious if your child injures their mouth, but try to stay calm. Panicking can only add to your child’s stress. Keep a clear head, assess the situation, and take control to address the issue.

Try To Control Any Bleeding

If your child’s mouth is bleeding, use clean gauze, cotton balls, or paper towels to absorb the blood, applying gentle but firm pressure to control it. Oral injuries can bleed heavily, but by maintaining pressure on the area or having your child gently bite down on gauze, the bleeding should reduce within a few minutes.

Reduce Swelling & Pain

You can give your child over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol or Motrin for pain and inflammation. Applying an ice pack to the cheek near the affected area can help numb the site and reduce swelling.

Common Emergency Procedures For Kids

Depending on the type of dental emergency your child is facing, different procedures may be needed. For decayed teeth, fillings or crowns may be required, while crowns are often needed for broken or damaged teeth. A pulpotomy (baby root canal) may be necessary for a damaged or decayed tooth that has become infected. Other common emergency procedures include replacing lost dental work, such as fillings or crowns, and treating oral lacerations to the tongue, cheeks, lips, or gums.
